On this day 110 years ago, Omega Psi Phi fraternity was founded on the campus of Howard University.

It was the first fraternal organization founded at an HBCU. With principles of manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift, the organization’s programs centered around social action, education and voter mobilization.

The organization produced members that have excelled in all aspects of life, like famed poet Langston Hughes, who joined as an undergraduate at Lincoln University, civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, who joined as an undergraduate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Robert Weaver, an economist who became the first African American to be appointed to the cabinet of a United States presidential administration.
