Sophie Parsons and Ross Turner are UC San Diego grad students performing their Ph.D. research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) as part of the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance. Their work is aimed at understanding and optimizing the ability of high-power lasers to simulate x-ray blow-off and thermo-mechanical shocks. For their research, they are working with several different laser facilities at LLNL, including the Optical Science Laser and a new laser capability being deployed called LIGHT (Light Induced compression for Grain scale with High Throughput).
