Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly insists authorities are not interested in making Australia Omicron-free, saying the government’s border restrictions were imposed to slow down its spread.

It comes as Professor Kelly says the new strain most likely spent weeks circling southern Africa before officials sounded the alarm.

“The measures imposed early at our international border are managing the bulk of the risk of this variant, giving us the time to learn more about it,” he told a Senate Committee hearing.

“To be very clear, we are not looking to stop the entry of this variant, but rather, looking to slow down its transmission into and within Australia as we have time to learn as much about it as we can to guide our ongoing public health response.”
